Sayre's curriculum offers a comprehensive, self-paced academic program that includes Language Arts, Mathematics, Geography, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Art, Music and Physical Education. The curriculum also places a heavy emphasis on life skills, peace education, and grace and courtesy. All students are encouraged to learn through observation, analysis and problem solving through a spiraling curriculum that reflects the growing developmental needs of each child. Each of Sayre's Certified Montessori teachers is a resource, a guide and a facilitator for the children's aptitude as lifelong learning matures. MULTI-AGE CLASS-ROOMS allow for a range of academic levels within each class; minimizing the negative aspects of competition and encouraging the development of leadership skills in older students. Primary (ages 3-6) Mastery of basic skills is developed through independent choice of classroom materials; developing life skills such as cooking, cleaning, and peer-to-peer compromise; and negotiation is an important part of the school day and encourages creative thinking, problem solving, independence and self-expression. Lower Elementary (ages 6-9) & Upper Elementary (ages 9-12) The Sayre Elementary Program takes an individual approach to learning that allows students to study topics that are personally interesting and also those that provide work geared toward each student's academic needs and achievement level. Students progress at their own rate and are encouraged to learn for their own satisfaction rather than for external rewards. Children set individual work goals on a daily and/or weekly basis. The teachers guide the children through these goals which are adjusted on an ongoing basis to match the students' aptitude, learning style and interests.
